Pass The Potions, Please!

5 Tips for an extra spooky Halloween-birthday party

Halloween birthday parties can last well into November! With so many fun options to enjoy, why not? From Harry Potter’s Wizard World to Mystery-Games, Fall Birthdays just scream for spooky who-dun-its, costumes, and potions galore. In this article, The Play Lab will share our favorite expert tips for one of our favorite hosting holidays: a fun, inspiring, educational, and stress-free list of different options you can choose from to create your own spooky birthday party in one of the most enjoyable and spookiest times of the year!

DON’T HAVE THE TIME?

No problem, we’ve got this. The Play Lab can organize everything for you from exciting invitations to decorating and hosting your actual party. Leave it to us so you can enjoy the day.

TIP 1: MAGIC INVITATIONS “Disappearing Ink"

This recipe requires:

1 lemon, cotton tips, bottle, recycled blank paper, and a bowl.

Find the rest of your mystery instructions here

Top Secret Disappearing Ink invitations are only one example of ways that Halloween Parties can be full of STEAM-based activities, proven to help children activate both sides of their brain simultaneously, and set them up for success in today’s world.

TIP 2: POTIONS, ANYONE? | WHO DOESN’T LOVE A POTIONS BAR?

Mom-blogger “ACottonKandiLife” has put together a complete list of Halloween party ideas with templates from her Etsy shop, menus, and activities — including her MONSTER MUCUS potion (or poison?) made of 1 Eye of Newt and 2 Monster Slimes, her Dragon Egg Hunt, and Creature Creation Cupcake Station. Kandi advises: “The key is making sure you have the correct size pump for your bottles.”

Harry Potter Fans can find a list of Potions and Drinks Here

Steamy, bubbling, frothy, enchanted, smoky, green, stinky, or sweet, potions are one of The Play Lab’s favorite party — and STEAM-based — activity. Following a recipe is fun, but so is concocting your own creation!

TIP 3: CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE POTIONS PARTY

Offer different colored drink crystals (like Emergen-C) for each child to choose from. They can add these to different neat glasses combined with ingredients like vinegar, lemon juice, food coloring, edible glitter, dry ice (if you’re feeling up to it), baking soda for bubbling up, and different aromas.

DID YOU KNOW THAT TONIC WATER GLOWS IN BLACK LIGHT??

After the kids make their drinks, place them under the black light for the truth test —- is it a real potion or poison or only a game? We’re not telling!

TIP 4: CHEMISTRY!!!

Science Bob can turn a clear liquid into a dark blue instantaneously —- and so can you!

Ingredients:

3 clear plastic cups 4 ounces or larger

A 1000 mg Vitamin C tablet from the pharmacy (you can also use two 500mg)

Tincture of iodine (2%) also from the pharmacy

Hydrogen peroxide (3%) yep, also from the pharmacy

Liquid laundry starch (see below for alternatives)

Safety goggles

Measuring spoons

Measuring cup

An adult helper

TIP 5: HAUNTED BALLOONS AND SCREAMING CUPS

Because nothing says Halloween like dancing ghosts and shrieking flatware, and finally, one of our favorites, impress your neighbor with THE SPOOOOOOKY JACK-O’-LANTERN!!!

Aren’t ALL Jack-O’-Lantern’s spooky, you might ask? We hear you — and your screaming cup too! Unlike your typical halloweener, this Jack-O'-Lantern's Green!
